Weekly Reporter

>From rmgate - home of lists and stuff.

As of today we have 17,198 subscribers on 252 lists. 16,670 of those are
genealogy subscribers (on all the genealogy lists) with 7,207 different
addresses (some people subscribe to more than one list).

There is a new release of Mercury out. That's the software program used to
run the lists. I haven't downloaded it, yet, but will in the next few
days. The biggest change for you will be the NOMAIL command that will then
be available.

Remember: commands go to MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu

Remember: you have to be accurate in your typing:

Commands include:

UNSUB **&&^%(*
SUB **&&^%(*
REVIEW **&&^%(*
SET **&&^%(* DIGEST
SET **&&^%(* NOMAIL (that will be available in the next few days)
SET **&&^%(* MAIL

Where **&&^%(* is the list name you want to set.

The bad news is the author hasn't changed the ability to hide the errors
messages from you. He says (and I don't doubt his veracity) that he is
following the standards and the problem lies with the various services
that don't handle errors correctly. Trust me, I see some weird setups from
these providers (including big ones, like Compuserve). But I have pointed
out to him that no one is likely to get several thousand of these folks to
see the light and change the way they do business. I don't know if that
will help convince him we need a change or just make him angrier with me,
but...

My program. I feel like Microsoft with a pre-announcement but I'm still
working on the sucker.

DON'T ATTACH FILES TO YOUR MESSAGES!!! It really messes up some
subscribers' news readers. Files should only be sent person-to-person.
Plus, everyone should be somewhat concerned about virus spread. You should
test downloaded files before you run them (if they are an .EXE file).

I updated my book list on June 23rd. and added 22 "new" used books.
They may be of interest to you.

Hi Larry.
I just thought I'd suggest something that works for me.
A lot of people don't realize that they can use cut-and-past in their
e-mail messages. I use it all of the time. Rather than typing something
into the body of a message (such as the list requests you put in this
weekly reporter), I just cut and then paste it into my new message. It
works for everything you want to enter. ctl+insert to copy, and
shift+insert to paste. I realize a lot of people probaly do this already,
but I'll bet there are even more who do not. It might cut down on the
number of miss-types addresses and requests.

To subscribe to a list at this site, send a message to

MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu

You can put anything you want in the subject line. You can have a
signature file, but it should start with a blank line or you'll get some
weird error messages as the server tries to process your signature.

In the body of the message type

SUB &**^%$

Obviously, you won't type &**^%$, but people have tried to type whatever I
have put in there to date, so maybe this wil work.

In place of &**^%$, put the name of the list EXACTLY as you see it below.
NOTE!!!! The command to subscribe is SUB (not SEND).

Full lists of lists are available. Send a message to the MAISER address
above:

SEND &**^%$

where you put the name of the file you want in place of &**^%$. NOTE: To
get a file the command is SEND (not SUB). You have to type it just as it
appears below. None of the variations I've seen (and that's a bunch) will
work worth a hoot. Trust me.
