WELCOME to the SULLIVAN Family list.

**************
There is a lot of important information in this message, including
general information about lists as well as specific information about
this list. I'll be glad to help you if you have problems, but I'll also
be frank: If you don't have time to read this message and learn the
proper way to use lists, you shouldn't be subscribed. Please take just
a few minutes to read this message. Keep it so you can refer to it later.

    REVIEW SULLIVAN

See if your name is on the list. If not, please let me know at
   	resource@seidata.com

SOME LISTS ARE SLOW, SO GIVE YOUR MAIL A DAY OR TWO, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE
IN DIGEST MODE.

Another problem lies with your mail handler. List servers automatically
read your mail address off your incoming message. Your mail header MAY
have the wrong address in it. One lady keeps subscribing, then her mail
starts bouncing, I drop her, she subscribes again. Something is wrong
with the address in her mail header. Another example is the addressing
for @mail....missouri.edu. It comes in as @mail.pop.missouri.edu but
that sets up a mail loop; the correct address is @mail.coin.missouri.edu.

If you have persistent problems, contact me direct at the above address!

PLEASE READ AND SAVE THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE.....THANKS

The list is not moderated. Any message sent to it is automatically
bounced back out to everyone on the list. While I in no way want
to stifle free discussion, as list owner I reserve the right to step
in if a flame war erupts that becomes tedious for other subscribers,
or if someone becomes unseemly (excessive use of profanity, for
instance).

If you have a personal message for someone, please send it to their
address, not the list server address. Any mail sent to SULLIVAN will
automatically be sent to everyone on the list.

PLEASE SAVE THIS MESSAGE. To subscribe to the list, send a message to

I may not be able to continue responding individually to error

I am trying to design a response that will answer your questions.
If you are still lost, send a message to postmaster@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu
for help.

Errors - and misunderstanding error messages you get - is one of our
biggest problems. I recommend you send the following command to the
MAISER address:

SEND ERRORS.FAQ

then take the time to read that file.

IN GENERAL:

1) Many types of software protect you (the subscriber) from error messages.
Mercury (which I use here) doesn't - but it's free and the best I can
get at the present for several reasons. I hope to change this, I just
don't know when I'll get it done.

2) Read the error message. If it says "unknown user" or "full mailbox"
or "cannot append" or something about a "loop", then send me a copy.
I fix those problems by bouncing the culprit (although they may be
perfectly innocent - there's just no other choice). If it says
"transient error" then don't send it to me. These are errors like
"connection refused" or "host reset". The Internet is in constant flux
with systems crashing and coming back up. I can't fix those problems.

IF YOU GET THESE ERRORS THEN YOUR MESSAGE WENT OUT AS IT WAS SUPPOSED
   TO.

3) If your error message begins like this:

Subject: Error notification

PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE!

With reference to your message with the subject:
   (whatever your subject line was)

One or more addresses in your message have failed with the following
responses from the mail transport system:

then you *did* have a problem reaching this server. Read the error
message; it will probably tell you what failed.

Your help with this problem is appreciated.

WELCOME TO THE SULLIVAN FAMILY HISTORY

The name of O'Sullivan, O'Sullavan, O'Sullivant, McSullivan, McSullavan,
McSullivant, Sullivan, Sullavan, Sullivant, Sullavant is one of the
oldest names in Europe. It began about the year 700 to 900 AD in the Southwest
portion of Ireland with a split in the McCarthy Sept. It is
in theory traceable to one man which makes it today one of the most common
European names in the world. It is the third most common name in
Ireland. In the United States 1 out of every 1000 people is named
Sullivan and the name is the 50th most common in the United States. Sullivans
can befound in the telephone books of every major city in
the world. (This includes Moscow and Peiping}.
There is some controversy to meaning of the name Sullivan. In Gaelic
it is O'Suileabhain which means either descendant of either hawkeye or one-eye.
Given the nature of the times when the name was established,
the name one-eye makes more sense.
About 1192 AD, the O'Sullivans were driven from the area along the
River Suir to what is today County Kerry and County Cork Ireland. At this time,
the Sept broke into two Septs, The O'Sullivan-Mor and the O'Sullivan-Beare.
By the 15th century, the name had split againt into a total of seven
septs. The O'Sullivan-Mor is the largest of the Septs. The
O'Sullivan-Mor and the O'Sullivan-Beare represent about 70% of all of the
Sullivans.
In the early 1300's, there appeared to be some confusion as to who
were the Royal Families of Europe. A commission was set up to determine
the Royal Families. While about 90% or more of the requests to be
declared a royal family were turned down, the O'Sullivan request was
honored and the O'Sullivans were declared a Royal Family. This is
why the crown appears in the family crest.
In the early 1600's the family rose against the Crown of England in
the Desmond Wars as a part of the Eoghannacht (Children of Owen) Clan.
The war lasted 9 years and is sometimes called the Nine Years War.
After the death of the McCarthy-Mor, the head of the clan, the
O'Sullivan-Mor took control of the Clan.
With victory within their grasp at the Battle of Kinsella, the
O'Sullivans were defeat after the O'Neils crumbled in the battle.
The O'Sullivan-Mor disappears from history and the O'Sullivan-Beare
flees to Spain. The O'Sullivan's have been referred to as the last
Kings of Ireland.
Later in the 1600's, the Sullivans were attacked by Cromwell in
his first invasion of Ireland. They were a specific target of his.
From this point on Sullivans start appearing all over the world.
It is hoped that this list will help everyone try to track members of
their family and learn the history of the Sullivans. It is a fantastic story.
Everyone is invited to participate. Everyone is invited to learn.

Good luck in your genealogy search

Jim Sullivan
